WHAT DO I BELIEVE, REALLY?
I woke up today thinking about unconscious bias, or rather the idea that we can believe something differently in our hearts than what we’re aware of, especially about different groups
of people.
So, I asked myself, “self, how can I simultaneously live in a parallel reality of unconscious beliefs and
responses?” I further reflected on a bible verse that says our behaviors (works) reflect what we truly believe in our hearts (faith). And then my journey began, what do I really believe?
Have you ever had habits you wanted to change but couldn’t? Can somebody say, hello ice cream bars?! I began to realize that I have given unconscious consent in different areas of my life. And although I say I want to do something, my actions have revealed another alternate belief lurking underneath the surface of my awareness.
What rich answers would we find if we could dive into our unconscious and explore our true beliefs? Just as ignorance of the law does not excuse us from the consequences of breaking it, ignorance of our
unconscious biases and prejudice does not mitigate the harm and injury they can impose upon others.
I ask you to join
me this week for a deep dive into the exploration pool of our behaviors concerning racial equity. Let’s join hands, take a closer look, and courageously ask the question, “what do I believe, really?”
